Avitrol, an EPA-registered bird pesticide, often causes birds to fall to the ground, convulse, and die—a reaction that horrifies onlookers. The product is banned in many places, including in New York City.

Avitrol Whole Corn is treated whole corn that is used to permanently remove a pigeon flock from unwanted areas.

It is made with whole corn kernels that are treated with an agent that causes a reaction in birds when eaten that is similar to an epileptic seizure. Birds that eat the Avitrol bait will be affected causing them to act in a way that alerts the other birds to leave the area.

The 1:40 dilution ratio works to limit the amount of active ingredient the target species is exposed to, with the goal being to give the bird just enough bait for a reactionary dose, scare the rest of the flock away for good, and watch the reacting bird fully recover without side effects.

Avitrol is used as a chemical frightening agent to remove pest birds from a given location. Avitrol as applied is a chemically treated grain bait. The active ingredient in Avitrol baits, 4-aminopyridine, is an acute oral toxicant which acts on the central nervous system and the motor nervous system.

This pesticide is extremely toxic to mammals and birds. This product is toxic to vertebrates. Wildlife and pets feeding on treated bait may be killed.

The better mixtures contain plenty of flaked maize, sunflower seeds and peanut granules. Small seeds, such as millet, attract mostly house sparrows, dunnocks, finches, reed buntings and collared doves, while flaked maize is taken readily by blackbirds.

Birds kept inside with out access to other birds only need to be wormed yearly as there is little chance of infestation. Outside birds should be wormed more frequently, we recommend 3 monthly worming treatments. You might be wondering how your bird may contract internal parasites.

Repellent Sprays. There are several versions of bird repellent sprays you can make at home but the most popular is a concoction of chili peppers, water, and vinegar. To make this spray, crush dried red or green chili peppers into a mixture of water and vinegar.
